Tech Tip : Get Windows Explorer To Help Sort And Organise Your Data

There is a little known feature in Windows Explorer that helps to sort and organise your data where you can ask it to group files together.

This is not the same as the sort function, although it uses the same attributes, it is different because it groups the information together instead of sorting it and displaying it in ascending or descending order.

Grouping data allows you to sort it by using the attributes

Here is how to do it:

  • In Microsoft Windows, Open File Explorer
  • Navigate to the folder with the data you would like to group
  • Right click on a blank area in the folder
  • From the popup menu, select "Group by"
  • Pick the attribute to group the data by from the list of
    • Name
    • Date modified
    • Type
    • Size
    • (none) - to turn off the grouping
  • And choose the option to make the data ascending or descending

This will then group the data according to the criteria you have selected.  Have a go and see if grouping your data helps!

Note: there is he option to select more in the data grouping sub menu, this allows you to bring up more information about your files and folders, and allow you to add columns of information based on your section from the list of additional attributes.
