Tech Tip – Handy Helpful Hyphens!
Did you know that you can use a hyphen to refine a search in Google? If you want to exclude a specific word from a search, use a hyphen after the search term followed by the words to exclude them.
For example, if you want to search for a Typhoon referring to weather rather than the aeroplane, here is how to do it:
- Open your web browser
- Go to www.google.co.uk
- Enter the words typhoon -jet in the search box and click search
- the results will come back excluding any references to the term jet so you should be inundated with links and images to weather!
NOTE: if you want more than one word to be excluded from the search, you must have a handy helpful hyphen in front of each word, for example typhoon -jet -plane -aero which will exclude all three words from the search
